 Visiting the ship Minimize

Slave Ship The Zong - William WilberforceThe ship was only available to visit for a 10 day period; 30th March to 9th April 2007

What was it? The 'Free at last?' exhibition incorporating 'The Zong'  was a time-limited, unique and novel experience.  This exciting approach to promoting learning about the European Slave Trade was so much more than an exhibition.  A replica of a notorious slave carrier The Zong contained an exhibition designed to depicit the inhumanity of the slave trade and show something of what life was for those who were transported as slaves across the Atlantic Ocean.

It was an experience that examined and used the past to educate and strengthen us for the future.  Learning from the past is our most powerful weapon against repeating devestating mistakes.  It is our guide in growing towards a more learned, whole and harmonised human nation.

Free at last? was also an inquisitory exhibition, which meant that when you had absorbed some of the facts about the European Slave Trade and The Abolition, visitors were encourage you to join in considering the meaning of freedom.

Visitors could explore issues around the legacy of slavery and how these issues are still deeply rooted in our society.  They were encouraged to join in the fight against modern slavery (see the Links page or click here). They could explore why we humans are capable of committing such atrocites against one another.  Or for some, they just walked away from the whole exhibition, reflective and lost in the moment.

The visit of the exhibition and ship were funded privately was only available to visit for a 10 day period; 30th March to 9th April 2007.  Please help make a ship based exhibition like this permanent in our nation and show your support by signing our online petition - click here to sign our online petition
